Tutoring review by Jan in Dexter, MI
I met with the student for the first time and we became acquainted. The student told me about his statistics class and how far behind he is. We decided together that the best way to proceed would be to start with the basics and work our way toward catching up with the class. We started by discussing measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode) and calculated them for a sample data set. We then talked about standard deviation and calculated it with the same set of data. The student seemed to catch on to the formula and did well in the calculations. We then discussed frequency distributions, and histograms. Finally, we went over normal distributions and how to show the position of standard deviations on the normal curve. We made plans to meet twice a week.

Tutoring review by Kenneth in Dexter, MI
The student and I spent our time together working on his pre-lab for his lab tomorrow. We began by discussing the objectives of the lab and reviewing his knowledge of chemical and physical changes and properties. From there, it became apparent that he required further research in this area and so we spent some time research these topics online while I provided assistance as a guide. We reviewed the differences between chemical and physical properties, intensive vs extensive physical properties, and how a chemical property is defined. I also showed him a demonstration video of hydrogen reacting with oxygen. The student was alert and productive throughout our session and had an excellent, curious attitude.

The student started with finishing his reading homework, which consisted of a passage on standard vs. military time and a few questions checking comprehension. We solved worksheet problems involving rounding, add/sub/mult/divide decimals. He played a short "paper carrier" video game for practice in rounding decimals. Then he completed all of his word problem set, which involved finding tips, discounts, and fractions.

In preparation for the student's chapter test tomorrow, we started the review from the beginning of the chapter. The first concept covered was factors and multiples. We discussed how this concept has to do with multiplication and explained the difference between factors and multiples. We also discussed how this involved GCF (Greatest Common Factor) and LCM (Least Common Multiple). Then she practiced some problems from her book. Next, we reviewed ratios, ratio tables, and rates. After discussing the concept and reviewing the strategies and skills, she again practiced from her textbook. She demonstrated a positive attitude towards the material reviewed.
