Recent Country Knolls Tutoring Session Notes

Tutoring review by Samuel in Country Knolls, NY
We devoted some time to memorizing the sum/difference identities as well as the double angle theorems to solve trigonometric equations. We tried to come up with our mnemonics and songs to help her remember these identities. We then used the rest of the time to solve similar problems related to these identities. She has a quiz on the identities tomorrow, which she should be great in.

Tutoring review by Emily in Country Knolls, NY
We covered word problems involving containers with material being added at one rate and material being depleted at a different rate, finding maximum values, critical points, etc. The student expressed that working through problems together was helpful for her. This was our first session together so it is hard to note progress, but I believe she became more comfortable with the problems as we went through more of them.

During our session, the student and I worked from her algebra 2 review guide and bonus sheet for her exam. We covered trigonometric functions, how to use a unit circle, and 30-60-90 triangles. She seems to understand the information and did well on the study sheets.

Tutoring review by Kenneth in Country Knolls, NY
The student and I went over her most recent test score. We then went over her practice test for her forthcoming exam and spent most of the time going over how to do the problems on the practice test. Additionally, we went over the midpoint formula in depth. She had an excellent attitude throughout the entire session.

Tutoring review by Eric in Country Knolls, NY
Before this session, the student got the ACT book and looked over the English and math chapters. She came to me with questions from the math section related to ratios and permutations/ combinations, and I helped her understand how to do those types of problems. We then went over strategies for the science section, including how to approach each passage. I recommended that she continue reading the book as well as doing practice problems and tests, preferably timed.

Tutoring review by Leslie in Country Knolls, NY
This was my first time meeting this student. The lesson focus, aka the most recent topic from her algebra class, was equations and inequalities with absolute value which describe the set of points a certain distance away from a center point. Once she was able to rewrite the equation in words as, "The solutions are 4 spaces away from the center at -3," she became much more comfortable working with variations on the problems, and moving between the different representations: equation (or inequality), graph on a number line, solution set, and verbal description. I did notice that she sometimes makes errors when adding or subtracting positive/ negative numbers, but she can fix her errors when I pointed them out. At the end of the lesson, we also touched on the geometry topics of surface area and volume, and how prisms with the same volume can have different surface areas. She told me that those were one of her more challenging topics from geometry. I left her with the problem-solving papers that we worked on together during the lesson. Overall, the lesson went very well, and the student was open to trying creative variations on the math topics.
