During this session the student continued her work with her summer packet. We reviewed solving inequalities with one variable and graphing the solution set. She will benefit from additional practice solving these problem types to gain better fluency. She is able to follow step by step algorithms. We spent the remainder of the session with a quick lesson on graphing linear equations. We went over concept of x and y intercepts, as well as reviewed slope-intercept form, so that she should be able to complete the remainder of her packet.

Tutoring review by Lena in Corydon, KY
The student's class had been taking derivatives and learning the multiplication, quotient, chain, and power rules. She understood the multiplication and quotient rules but was less confident with the chain and power rules. We went over those in terms of u-substitution and how rewriting a complicated function in terms of u can be useful in solving for the derivative. I did one example from the book for each and then had her do another. She seemed more confident after. She was also unsure of the conceptual problems on her homework. We reviewed how to check if a function was continuous and differentiable at a point.

Tutoring review by Verne in Corydon, KY
The student and I worked on 2 class problems on Newton's second law/kinematics. At first he was not sure how to start these problems. After going through these 2 problems, he was able to solve several examples independently. We also reviewed how to resolve forces and find x and y components. I introduced the combination of two forces at right angles. We will review this in our next session.

Tutoring review by Jerilynn in Corydon, KY
We practiced using the various trigonometric identities to simplify trig expressions. We practiced converting everything into sines and cosines and then using our properties of fractions and the Pythagorean identities to finish simplifying. We clarified what having an angle of pi/2-x does as an input for each of the trig functions and used the graphs of sine and cosine to illustrate the shift. We also looked at what having a negative angle does for each of the trig functions. We made sure to identify when to use the different techniques, such as using the Pythagorean identities when we have squares or multiplying by the conjugate when we have a binomial in the denominator of a fraction. The student is doing well simplifying using factoring and fractions, and he is getting better using the Pythagorean identities.
