Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I worked through two chapters of her division book. The first was long division with 2, 3, 4, and 5 digit numbers. We practiced estimating, mental math, and staying organized on the page. Next we did a chapter of mixed calculations. She learned her order of operations and completed the two step problems with little difficulty."
"This past session the student and I did more work with the common core flash cards. We did problems like figuring out as many ways to add to 10 and 20 as possible, as well as subtracting to them. We also did word problems, and turned our word problems into graphs. Some other things we worked on were reading comprehension and adding several numbers at once."
"We covered the pretest for the base 10 unit, which will cover a deep conceptual understanding of place value. The student did well on the pretest; she connected some of the questions to what she has been learning in school. The most challenging problem for her was comparing the digit of 1 in the numbers 2301 and 2310 to say that in the second number, the 1 was worth ten times the 1 in the first number. We used these skills to discover a mystery number (112, 134) using place value clues."
"We covered word problems, specifically recognizing operators to use in word problems. The student was happy! I rewarded her for her hard work with prizes. She states she is doing better. She is definitely improving on her mathematical reasoning."
"The student had a much better night tonight! We worked on math for most of the session, finishing her two workbook pages on long form multiplication and division. She then was able to complete her Spanish exercises as well."
"We reviewed the student's unit test. One of the first things we will do next time is create a comprehensive formula sheet--he had trouble finding the relevant formulas, but I think they're just in a combination of places--textbook, notes and handouts. He said they'll be allowed to have a notecard worth of information on the final, so we will work on that next time."
