Eric ...opportunities to teach lessons and tutor various students of all learning levels. I have been told I am a very patient, supportive, and engaging tutor. Choose me as your tutor if you are struggling with a couple of problems, having trouble understanding a concept, or simply need another person's perspective on any math topic.... In high school, I always had a higher interest in mathematics than any other subject. During my senior year of high school, I had taken the maximum amount of math classes available, so I decided to assist my math teachers during my free time. I helped students in all levels of high school math, especially TAKS material. The students I helped tutor seemed to learn the material slowly and were heavily dependent on calculators. In these classes, there were always too many students to effectively tutor each student one by one. Therefore, I decided to teach the material to a small group of students, so these students could then teach the material to their classmates as well. The principle of "the best way to learn is to teach" helped me explain the math content effectively. This experience as a math tutor helped me realize that I loved learning new content and being able to teach it to large groups of students. Entering college, I knew I wanted to become a high school mathematics teacher. I also understood that I still needed to learn how to become a successful teacher. This led me to the UTeach program at The University of Texas at Austin. During my time in the UTeach program, I learned that there are many great ways to teach and manage a class. I have been blessed with the opportunities to work and share ideas with several mentors, teachers, and colleagues. By listening to new ideas and witnessing my colleagues teach different types of lessons, I developed a list of characteristics that I believe great teachers must have. As a start, I plan to establish and practice effective classroom and time management strategies. Without effective classroom and time management strategies, the students could take advantage of teachers and eventually develop bad student habits for the rest of their academic careers. I hope to teach and train my students to become well-behaved and studious individuals. As a teacher, I want my students to look forward to coming to class every day. In order to accomplish this, I first need to develop a strong relationship with my students and their parents. I want my relationships with my students and their parents to be based primarily on trust and respect. Developing strong relationships with my students will help transition to a better learning environment in the classroom. I plan to incorporate inquiry-based, project-based, and student-active approaches in my lessons to help accommodate the different learning abilities of my students.
