Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We began by going over important themes for the 20th century, focusing on decolonization and how it overlaps with the themes of migration, economics, and state conflict. We also talked about developing technologies, again keeping in mind their broader impacts. Then we discussed some of the political/economic alliances that emerged in the 20th century, which led to a conversation about the Warsaw Pact, NATO, NAFTA, and OPEC. After that, we reviewed the requirements for each kind of essay and practiced with multiple-choice questions. We agreed that next time we'd work on more practice questions from the modern period and practice each kind of essay in our last three sessions. He's progressing nicely."
"The student and I discussed the AP exam that he took last week. He then worked on a history related assignment on the opium wars and the Boxer Rebellion references in an Edgar Allen Poe story."
"Today we studied world history, specifically the Renaissance and Reformation in Europe. We began with an overview of what he knew about the topics, and I gave him a lecture-style overview of this historical period. We highlighted key themes based on the sections of his textbook, and two or three times I had him review and recap what we were talking about. We concluded by answering sample questions together and considering social history aspects of the chapter. We also looked at art, focusing on differences among the art from the Dark Ages, the Italian Renaissance and the Northern Renaissance."
