Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Picked up with mixed numbers in subtraction, addition, multiplication, etc. Reviewed how to solve these including finding the Least Common Denominator, using improper fractions to solve easier, and how to simplify (finding greatest common factor). Moved into absolute values, rational and irrational numbers, (non)terminating decimals, (non)repeating decimals, etc., and square root and exponents used in expressions and how to expand them also."
"The student and I went over his analogy homework. On analogies his problems seem to stem from two places, his unfamiliarity with the terms and finding the trick questions. We worked a little on both issues today. Then we did some more work on his reading comprehension. There are three items there that need to be worked on: checking his answers, tone, and questions that have to do with inferences. I gave him some tips to deal with each of those problems and left him three passages to work through. Most of the focus in our sessions will be either in the analogies or the reading comprehension. He does pretty well on the math, I will probably spend a session closer to the test working with him on math as a refresher."
"The student and I studied for his Spanish test next week. He had clearly improved in his knowledge of the vocabulary since our last study session. His memorization/study was evident, though he still struggled with a few words. Likewise, his understanding of grammar was near perfect (definite/indefinite articles, possessive adjectives, conjugation of -ir & -er verbs). Even though it was not directly mentioned as a subject of his test, I tested his knowledge using translation sentences. Though he did struggle with some vocabulary recall (due to the fact that I was deliberately testing those words with which he still struggled), he did well at reading and understanding the Spanish sentences. Overall, he is progressing well in Spanish."
"Our session mainly focused on review of past vocabulary and working on how to transform a question into a response and vice-verse. We also worked a bit on the concept of measure words and how to use them. The student was pretty responsive."
"The student and I reviewed various math topics. Adding/subtracting fractions, making graphs from tables, converting fractions to mixed numbers and vice versa, etc. We also covered the water cycle and began an introduction to the periodic table."
"The student and I worked on logic game type identification and diagramming. He has a strong LR score and does well on LG questions but identifying the type of game and most appropriate diagram are his weak points, so we concentrated on that."
