Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"She did very well on her reading homework, adopting my strategies effortlessly on the first try. However, she still needs to review math concepts and strategies, so we carefully went through another section."
"Today, we spent the first half of the session looking over more English questions. The student's score improved on this test. We spent the second half of the session working on science. We're going to continue to work on science during our next session. Overall it was a good session."
"We completed two diagnostics today to provide the student with a new Math problem. I am very impressed by his diligence, fervor, and passion for learning across subjects. We covered Reading and English today, and will return to Mathematics and Science tomorrow at 1PM EST."
"In this session, we went over some reading passages (one humanities and one literature). The student had a bit of trouble with the humanities passage, as it is often difficult to pick up and notice irony/humor from older passages. However, once she understood the humor and irony of the passage, it was a bit easier for her to answer the questions. She noted that it's often difficult to find humor on SAT reading passages as she does not expect humor to be present. If she's a bit more open to the idea that passages can and will be humorous, she may have more ease. The literature passage she did very well with. We then continued with a number of math exercises, which she was very comfortable with."
"The student came with a couple more practice test sections done and I can see improvement. He is getting a lot more correct every time we meet. We spent the first half of the session going over the problems he omitted or missed, and then the rest of the time worked on new sections together."
"We worked on some math problems that the student got incorrect during her personal practice. I walked her through all of them and worked out where she went wrong. She said she felt much better going slowly and reading the problems carefully to make sure she didn't make any mistakes. We did a brief vocab reading practice and a few writing practices. She said she will be working on some reading and writing practice on her own time as well."
"The student and I worked on a practice exam. We covered numeral analysis, finding patterns in numbers, sentence completion, vocabulary, some math puzzles with figures and numbers. He did not struggle with anything that was covered in the session. He was very focused with all the material that was covered, and he was very interactive during the session. He asked questions when he was not sure what the answer was. The student showed that he understands the material, and that he knows at least how to get the final answer."
"The student and I spent our last session before she takes the SAT exam focusing on the Essay and the Writing section. We went through multiple Essay questions and worked on outlines and opening paragraphs. I worked with her to help her make stronger, clearer arguments in her thesis. We worked on the opening and closing sentences and how to anchor an argument to examples. Afterwards, we moved on to the Writing Section and drilled both Identifying Sentence Errors and Improving Sentences. She does better with Improving Sentence questions because she's able to use the answer options to help her see what the original error was. She is trying to get her score up to an elite level."
"First, we went through a practice test the student had taken. She did very well on the science section, but hadn't timed it. She struggled more with the math section. I timed her while she worked on science sections one at a time."
"We covered mainly Science and Reading today. We did a Science diagnostic test and the student scored very well. I assigned her a Reading diagnostic test as she feels that is her weakest area. In addition to the ACT content, I also went over some testing strategies with her. As she is looking to get a 36, there are a few specific things she can do to help boost her score up those last few points."
"We mainly covered the ACT English, Reading, and Science sections during this lesson. We talked about the student's college and ACT goals and how to best achieve them. Next lesson we're going to focus more on grammatical and style questions in the English sections with an emphasis on idioms. He did very well with the science section, especially for someone who had never practiced the science section beforehand. I told him that I would email him with online ACT resources and recommendations for different ACT practice books. Overall, he picked up concepts pretty quickly and employed them consistently throughout the lesson. I look forward to our next lesson."
"We spent most of today's session reviewing problems from two practice SAT exams the student took. There were a few math questions that stumped her, but in most cases there was a conceptual approach that would work in providing a quick answer. Critical reading had more trouble spots. In general, she needs to stay closer to the text and make sure her answers are supported by a particular excerpt. We'll work on that in our next session."
