"The student and I focused again on his English skills and trigonometry skills. I explained how to recognize a parenthetical statement and how to offset it with commas. I also showed him sentences where comma usage is unnecessary and distracting: when used with prepositional phrases, between subject and verb, etc. He and I did some timed practice with the reading sections. Pacing is, as always, going to be his biggest area for improvement. His reading skills are good, but not as strong as math and science. He is often lured by the trap that finding one possible answer in the reading section means it is correct. He and I will work on making sure that whatever detail he was able to pull out of a particular essay does, in fact, relate to and answer the question. Between developing reading skills and identifying grammar rules, the student and I will have plenty to practice, but I don't doubt that he will be able to make great improvements."
"We talked about the author's purpose and main points, and how to find those in a timely manner. The student seemed to be mostly adept at this. I left them with an English diagnostic test for the next session and a couple of practice questions having to do specifically with Reading. The strategy we talked about was identifying questions as referring or reasoning, and then answering them in the order that most made sense. The student's homework from the previous session showed some improvement."
"We went over English, reading and writing today. The student's brainstorming is much improved. We looked at two writing examples that he did a very good job with. Making sure that pre-work is good is a must! When his pre-work is good the essay is good. We talked about strategies on the reading session, including pre-reading, that he liked. We also spent time on a practice English test."
