Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In today's session we worked on vocabulary and an understanding of literary structure and theme. We went through a few assigned vocabulary words for the student's English class, and I recommended to him that he try to pronounce them to himself while practicing as a way of better remembering them. We also went over theme and how to understand the theme of a work of literature, especially by way of an understanding of symbols. We looked at some examples of symbols in books he has read and how the conflict, characters, and setting of a book all can be seen as symbols used to make up the book's theme. All in all the student seemed to absorb the material well."
"The student and I discussed the strengths and weaknesses of her Diagnostic Test Results in detail. I also asked her to do different SAT Verbal Section questions from the website, specifically on paragraph correction, reading comprehension, and sentence completion. I asked her to talk me through how she came to some of her answers so I could understand her strategies and thought processes and help her understand why certain answers were incorrect. Her overall reading comprehension is strong---we will work on expanding her vocabulary, identifying the author's point of view in a passage, and clarifying some grammatical rules to improve her scores on Sentence Correction questions. We talked about strategies for inferring a word's meaning by breaking it down to common suffixes and prefixes whose meanings she might already know. At the end of our session, I assigned Alice a timed essay and some additional Verbal SAT question sets from the website for next week. I also asked her to buy the SAT practice book so that we can do homework and classwork from those sample tests."
"I edited the student's paper and worked to provide suggestions on how to improve the thesis, grammar structure, and flow. The student is working on a second draft of the paper to be re-submitted tomorrow."
