Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We worked on quiz problems that tested convergence/divergence of a function using ratio or alternating series tests."
"We worked today on rational functions including inverse functions, directly proportional functions, graphing, and k values."
"The student and I discussed a wide variety of topics from his problem set and recent presentation. We spent the majority of our time looking at ellipses and their equations."
"Last week I had the opportunity to sit down with the student and her father to discuss how to approach the tutoring sessions and how to best benefit the student in her coursework. We discussed the layout of her course and the topics she previously covered, as well as what concepts she may be covering moving forward. The student has a lot of potential as a student, and I hope to not only reinforce her understanding of Pre-Algebra concepts, but teach her some lifelong learning skills, and how to utilize other resources around her in order to help her grow as a student."
"The student and I looked through past math assignments to ensure that she was retaining concepts she learned earlier in the year. It was evident that the student is much more comfortable with some formulas and problems she previously struggled to figure out. Additionally, I went through and was sure to check her homework which was a survey of sorts in preparation for the state exams. I was able to catch a handful of minor mistakes but once again, the student demonstrated a very competent understanding of the material. To reinforce the importance of double checking her work, I had the student identify what her mistake was in each of the problems and re-work her answers. We finished the session by going through a handful of the state exam problems from the packet I had sent to her last week. While answering these problems, we discussed strategies for approaching both the multiple choice and open response questions. I have encouraged the student to continue to work through these problems during the week and to contact me if she has any questions."
"Since this was our last session before the student begins his state testing, I wanted to let him choose what he wanted us to focus our session on. We'd spent last session on Reading and Writing and the session before going over Math, so I figured it would be best to spend our time working on what he felt most unsure about. He chose math, and we focused on the sections of his workbook that had caused him trouble in previous math packets - namely, three-dimensional shapes and probability/statistics. Overall, he did a very good job. He's come a long way in the past month getting better habits about showing his work on his math problems. Going back over his work, he combed through every part of the problem to find the error, and once he did, he was shocked at how simple it was. We talked about test strategy, working deliberately and efficiently, and how to approach these sorts of problems in the test. We will resume sessions the following week."
