Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Resumed meetings for one more volume review of Science content before the February test. Conducted a review practice through a complete ACT Science section. Still observing high accuracy given time and prompting, but some difficulty finding the relevant information quickly. Measured current progress in timed assessment; projected score still hovering around 28. I believe the student can score 30 with the right assortment of passages, our goal now should be to reinforce this as our "floor." Will build in some brief wrap-up practice as part of a test-wide review on 1/31."
"Today we did two complete, timed ACT reading tests. On the first test we implemented our strategies from our previous meeting - reading both science sections first followed by skimming the fiction, and then answering the line reference questions for the humanities for the remaining time. We discovered that he was reading every passage in under 5:00 and that he had time to read the entire fiction passage and that this was much more helpful. On practice test 3 he scored a 24.5. We then did practice test 4, implementing the new strategy of reading the fiction passage, as well. This proved to be more successful for him, as he scored a 26.3 on practice test 4. He has a great attitude and really dives into and analyzes the questions. I am seeing great growth and believe that continued practice with this quick reading and analysis will boost his score on his February test."
"Today, we started by covering her science homework, and then we focused on reading. She tried different strategies out today to figure out what works best for time pressure. The strategies we've discussed are helping her, but she is still challenged to make it through on time, so we discussed the necessity of not spending too much time on tough questions -- she can skip them, and fill them in later, depending on time. We finished with a bit more science prep, and she did fine on timing there."
