"I assisted the student with completing homework in Math, English, and Reading. We conducted Selective Detective drills. The student mastered Selective Detective the 2nd time around."
"Today's session was primarily about getting to know the student. We talked about his interests, and goals. I wanted to find a way to incorporate these interests into our math lessons, in order to make the concepts more meaningful for him. We also spoke about what he feels are the easiest aspects of math and what he feels he could use some more review on. Mom seems to be on the same page. We all agreed that we will start with the basics in order to build his confidence, and then see where we can go from there. Overall, I had a great session with him and I am very excited to work with him!"
"The student and I worked on ordering, comparing, adding and subtracting fractions. He had difficulties with these concepts, so we will be continuing work on these topics for future meetings. We will use visuals and descriptive language to expand his knowledge."
"I got to know the student and we spent lots of time discussing her life at school and home. We talked about issues she was worried about regarding school and brainstormed reasons she felt she was having difficulty. We looked through the available resources and I started to formulate a plan on our next steps. We will focus on problem solving while strengthening 5th grade skills. Improving confidence and motivation will also be an area we address."
"The student has moved on to percents. Even though she wasn't super-confident, she understood how the problems worked. I noticed that she tries to cut corners with her homework - she sees the pattern in the answers, and relies on the pattern instead of doing the thinking. While this sometimes works, often the pattern changes slightly (a two-digit number becomes a three-digit number), and the exact pattern no longer applies. I encouraged her to cover up the previous sections while she's solving so that she doesn't get tempted to rely on the answer pattern. I was impressed at how focused she was during this session."
"The student is taking more chances, moving ahead on his own without hesitating as much as he did before. He still guesses at words sometimes, but when I help him break the word apart, he usually gets it right. In math, we need to look at regrouping with addition. He did very well on the x2 multiplication as well as x5. We will look at some x3 next time."
