Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This was our first session and it went very well. He wanted some help reviewing for his science test, so we went through a few concepts which included wave mechanics, light, sound, the electromagnetic spectrum, vision and hearing, optics, the Doppler effect, and the phenomenon of color. Next, we went over a few things in geometry. He was working on the surface area unit. We spent most of our time on the surface area of cones and spheres."
"She has a test on Tuesday so we reviewed the notes from her class. We discussed strategies for the open note test and practiced finding the appropriate formulas for each question on her review assignment. She had new notes on chord relationships, but we also reviewed all sections of the current chapter. I recommended that she label/index her notes so she can quickly find information during the test."
"The student and worked on her homework. They are continuing to work with circles, and the homework focused on the equation of a circle. She said that she was confused and pulled out some notes from class. It looked like they had not done any example problems, so once we began to practice she caught on very quickly and got practically every problem correct. We then went back to the beginning of the chapter to begin review for her next test. The student and I went through the vocabulary in each of the first 2 sections, and she wrote the theorems out in her own words. We also did some practice problems from section one and will continue with the review when we meet on Saturday."
"Topics covered include the distance formula, collinear points, and angle classifications. More distance formula problems and application problems were practiced. The student had a better understanding of how to use the distance formula, collinear points, and how to classify angles. Practice problems from these topics were left for the student, as well as homework to practice multiplication tables."
"We went through surface area and volume of 3D shapes. We started to do questions on some of the SAT Biology. He did extremely well on his last two exams and is looking like a solid "A" for the marking period."
"The first fifteen minutes we sped through a simple chemistry worksheet that gave the student little trouble. After that we spent the entire tutoring time reviewing for her upcoming geometry test, on triangles, trig ratios, and special right triangles. We went through the mock test that the teacher provided, and I just let her go through it on her own as much as possible, helping her with the more difficult parts. After that we went back over the concepts and formulas that she will need for the test."
"The student had geometry homework covering line segments tangent to circles. She completed the work with little trouble."
"Regarding the Biology exam, she said she was pressed for time on the MC portion, but she thinks she did okay. We went over her Problem Set #5 homework for Geometry, which was tedious but she is getting better at remembering the concepts. We then studied for her final exam (first week of June), by reviewing past problem sets. She is much better at figuring out what she needs to do to solve the problems. The next couple weeks of review will help her achieve a good grade on her final."
"Today I continued to help the student review for probability type problems. We went over the students theorem, the differences between independent and dependent probabilities, multiplying probabilities, adding probabilities, and vs. or statements, intersection and union of events, coins, dice, cards, colored marbles in a bag, and probability by area."
"This log covers the hour the student and I spent on Wednesday 5/14 and the two hours from today, Thursday 5/15. Today the student and I worked on her final review packet for her geometry class, which covered ratios and identities of triangles. We also worked on her paper over Malcolm X. The student was doing so well today, her outline for her paper was excellent and she was doing extremely well on her math review."
"The session went well. We worked on her most recent homework set. Which covered independent and dependent probabilities. She seemed to have more trouble with the word problems. We will work on those more in the future."
"We have went over his Geometry Final Review Worksheet. We explained in detail how to use Trigonometric identities to solve various problems. Our focus of the tutoring session was to understand how to setup problems and than taking step by step processes to solve the problems. The student was struggling with understanding trig functions like sine, cosine, and tangent when working with triangles, but I believe the student improved in this area as we went over several review sheet problems. I plan to leave them with an equation sheet that he can use to better understand his geometry problems."
