Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I completed his homework together and reviewed some of the problems he did in class. He seems to be grasping the concepts of this chapter pretty well, however he struggles with word problems and setting up equations to solve them. We did some additional practice problems on this particular area and he seemed to pick it up well. He has a quiz at the end of this week and a chapter test the following week. We will be able to meet to review before his chapter test."
"During this tutoring session, we reviewed the polynomials from last week. I also taught her how to factor by grouping, which is the next lesson of her workbook. We then went over the entire chapter of polynomials, including addition, subtraction, and multiplication of polynomials and solving for polynomial equations. She seemed confident in each section, and only made small errors (such as negative signs) in the practice problems."
"The student and I worked on solving quadratics and the different ways he learned in school. The student is still doing excellent with math but struggling with his confidence. A big part of this comes from the fact that he gets nervous because he puts a lot of pressure on himself. We talked about this again and I am still trying to get him to relax a bit."
"The student began by showing me a recent quiz, and we corrected his mistakes using the whiteboard in a classroom (which was thankfully unlocked!). We used his teacher's syllabus and my textbook to practice more problems, as his class has moved from learning about lines to starting inequalities. The spring break for his school begins at the end of this week, but we'll be meeting next week to review his Spring Break packet."
"We completed her Algebra homework and worked on her Algebra test review. This time, I did not see any scores or grades. This time the student struggled most with adding where she was supposed to multiply. I left her with a page of extra practice problems when I noticed that she was not perfect at multiplying two expressions. I have no concerns from this session."
"We covered worksheets over different kinds of factoring, including "grouping" and "perfect square" factoring. The student seemed to be really struggling with the material when I got there and said her teacher didn't properly go over it in class. By the end of the session, she really seemed to understand."
"In the last session with the student, we worked on multiplication of polynomials. The student did well and did not have big issues with most of the questions. I will be trying to keep the sessions shorter since she appears to focus optimally for the 1.5 hrs sessions. She also did well on her section assessment."
"We covered in depth word problems for algebra. The student seems to have a good idea of the concepts but does not have an in depth enough understanding to apply the knowledge. We will be working on his application, ability to recall faster, and ability to put formulas together for problems."
"We went through his review for his algebra exam. It was about the rational functions and their properties. We covered how we can find the x-int, y-int, asymptotes, roots, hole and their graph. We solved almost 10 questions as well as 2 word problems. He is doing good and just needs to practice a little."
"Today I continued working with the student on his algebra skills for an upcoming quiz. He is beginning to clearly master the material and has become quite good at factoring quadratics and solving them."
"We began the session by reviewing one of last week's homework assignments on which she had questions. I explained and showed why a vertical line has an undefined slope while a horizontal line has a 0 slope using the slope formula. We also went through how to determine domain and range from an equation. I explained that there are certain restrictions placed on x by a square root and when x is in the denominator, and that range is a question of what are the possible values considering the function and the domain. We concluded the session with many review problems about finding the slope from a graph and/or using two points."
"We went over the student's recently assigned homework involving ratios and general problems for the placement test. We also went over some previously assigned worksheets in order to help the student prepare for the exam."
