"I gave the student a reading comprehension assessment. Vocabulary does not seem to be a problem for him, but he is having a lot of trouble with all but the most basic comprehension questions. Unless the answers are written specifically in the text, he seems unable to connect one point to another, or in some cases, he latches onto points which are completely irrelevant. He seems very eager to learn where his problems lie and how best to fix them. In fact, I am very impressed with his desire to improve.. I have told him to continue reading his current book (The Lost Journey by Rick Riordan) for the next week, and I have asked his mother to have him describe to her the events and characters of each chapter as he finishes them. Next week, I will either give him an excerpt from All Quiet On the Western Front or another (easier) war novel, as he enjoys reading war stories. I also gather that when reading, he can get through a paragraph (or multiple) without actually thinking about what the text is actually saying, so I have given him a story map template. I explained to him about using it to write down the basic information as it is given in the text, starting with characters and setting and continuing with major events, the climax, and the resolution. I believe that by actively looking for important items and meanings to write down, he will start looking for them automatically, so that eventually he won't need a template to write in."
"We started by going over the student's last essay he wrote and the feedback his teacher gave him. It seems like if he can expand on analysis, work on conciseness, and avoid grammatical errors, he will do very well on his next essay. We then began reading Macbeth by going over the book summary provided to him, and then reading the first 3 scenes."
"Worked through the remaining BOOK THIEF discussion questions as the semester draws to a close this week. Will be in touch with the student's mother about what, if anything, the student needs to do before the week is up, and we will meet one more time to finish up the book!"
