"We continued working on problems related to surface area and volume. Today's problems focused on more complex extrapolations, such as finding the volume of a hexagonal pyramid with only the side length and lateral edge length. The student did not understand how to do this, but upon showing her that the side length and lateral edge formed a right triangle with the pyramid height, she was able to quickly solve the problem. Other problems were easier. She also wanted me to go over the problems she got wrong on her quiz. While she understands the general mechanism by which to solve problems, she suffers from small errors or misconceptions. She understood my corrections and now understands how to do the problems. We will meet once more before her test this Friday."
"The student and I met for a "power hour" to prepare for his unit test on circles. We discussed how to read the notation so he could see what the problem was asking for in terms of angle measure or length. I deduced his test will be on sections 9.1 to 9.4 and identified practice problems to help him prepare for the test."
"During this session, the student and I continued practicing past geometry exams. We finished up two exam from previous years."
"Today, I reviewed a take-home quiz with the student. Most of the questions dealt with finding volumes of shapes. The hard part is to figure all the necessary measurements (sometimes the test makers are tricky by rotating the shape or leaving some measurements blank). After you have all the necessary measurements, all you have to do is plug it into the particular formula and get your volume!"
"We worked on all algebra, specifically quadratic equations, both factoring by the FOIL method and multiplying the factors. We also went over the distributive property with polynomials, adding and subtracting polynomials, and polynomials with exponents."
"Went over the student's packet and homework sheets involving similarity of triangles problems. Also worked on 3 dimensional shapes and calculating the volumes of prisms, cylinders, pyramids, etc. Worked on more challenging problems involving multiple 3D shapes with some shared quantity to solve for unknowns, etc."
