Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I discussed her homework on areas of regular polygons. She was able to talk herself through most of this with only a few strategy pointers from me. We discussed how there might be several correct ways to do these calculations, and we did one problem in two different ways to demonstrate. She did a nice job of calling up prior skills to find side lengths in 30-60-90 triangles. We also reviewed rationalizing denominators. She was able to complete the word problem on the surface area of a soccer ball with a little guidance. After she completed the problem, she said, "Oh, it wasn't as hard as I thought." She reported that she has a 95% average in geometry and that she got 100% on a recent test on the laws of sines and cosines."
"The student and I worked on problems of deriving information of circles and sectors, as well as areas of geometric probability. We discussed areas of concern for her on tests and quizzes, including ways to more quickly derive formulas."
"The student and I did a final review before her quiz tomorrow. We went over everything from areas and perimeters of squares, triangles, and any polygon to composite figures and changing areas. She has definitely mastered the concepts and manipulates them with ease. We specifically went over more composite figures and changing dimensions to further cement her understanding of these topics. I think she has progressed immensely and she will do great on her quiz."
"Today I covered circumference and areas of circles, sectors, arcs and their areas as well as calculations and relations involving similar triangles and rectangles. The student seems familiar with all these concepts. I've tasked him with practicing with a few problem sets that I assigned."
"Today we started Chapter 9 (Surface areas and Areas of Solids) and worked through 9.1 and most of 9.2, which covered the different types of solids and introduced surface areas of polyhedra and cylinders. He worked through these two chapters fairly easily once certain things were explained. He will complete the homework for the rest of Chapter 9 before our next meeting on Sunday so we can go over it and make sure he is ready for his tests on Monday."
"The student and I went over both Physics and Geometry during this session. In Physics, she informed me that she was struggling with the concepts of Ohm's Law, so we covered that until she felt comfortable with it and understood the material. In Geometry, we finished covering her homework on circle theorems and solving multiple ways that these problems can be present. She struggled a little with first recognizing what equations to use, but worked her way through them, along with getting past a few calculator issues (properly using parenthesis)."
