Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We first reviewed his past test which the student got a 65 on (a good grade compared to the average) and discussed his mistakes. Then, we started working on new material. He worked through his homework problems. He did great with geometric sequences and word problems regarding them."
"This session, the student did her homework, which was mostly review material. Then we spent a good chunk of time on how derivatives affect the shape of a function. The extra time was needed since she has struggled with graph-type problems in the past, so I made sure to cover the concepts thoroughly. Since our last session, she has made progress on remembering when to use the chain rule, although she still needed prompting about product rule."
"Today was our first session for our summer review to help get the student ready for Calculus in the fall. Today we mostly discussed the game plan for the summer and then began our initial review. The plan is do to an intensive pre-calculus review, focusing on the different kinds of functions and their properties. We talked about some basic ideas as to what calculus is and how it's divided basically into 3 sections (limits, derivatives, and integration). Then we looked at an outline of our summer review plans, and then dove into reviewing linear, quadratic, and polynomial functions. We discussed the differences of an equation versus a function, and some stipulations that must be met in order to be a function (e.g. vertical line test). We discussed some basic properties of functions, such as domain and range, and then looked at a linear function example to reiterate those concepts. During this process we are also working on proper nomenclature and written notation. Overall, the session went well and I think we set a good foundation of expectations for the summer sessions."
"Today the student had to complete two math assignments. He missed school last Friday and didn't complete the math assignment over the weekend. He is working on square roots and estimation of square roots. Because of his missing Friday he was behind on the notes so I had to give a small lecture to solidify the concept."
"I helped the girls learn simplifying and basic operations with rational functions. We worked on review sheets that the teacher had posted, and I went over the answers/ specific problems with them. We also talked about what to focus on the next few sessions."
"During this session, an algebra 2 review worksheet was completed in preparation for the upcoming test. Additionally, a past quiz was reviewed covering polynomials."
