Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we worked on statistics looking at scatter plots, association, and correlation. We ended the session with a bit of calculus."
"Today we reviewed a few of the homework problems. All of these were using the product, quotient, and power rules to find a derivative. She is doing very well with this and understands these topics well. She is organized as well. She just had a little trouble getting the correct answer on a couple problems due to forgetting to distribute a negative sign or to adding an exponent incorrectly. We also reviewed a few trig identities she can use to see if the answers she gets are equivalent to the back of the book answers. She had a little trouble with one word problem because she did not realize that finding the rate of change of an equation is equivalent to finding its derivative. Once this was clarified, she had no trouble finishing the problem."
"We reviewed her homework which covered obtaining the derivative of functions using the definition alone. The solution is straightforward but simplifying the equation resulting from the definition is tedious and can be confusing. However, her homework was designed well to help the student understand the process."
"The student and I started with refresher problems on solving linear inequalities. I gave her 10 problems including a couple of word problems on writing linear inequalities and then solving the inequality and graphing it on a number line. I recognize that when she rushes she makes little mistakes like graphing an inequality incorrectly. After this review, we went over two new concepts. The first was graphing inequalities on a coordinate graph and how to plot the line as well as shade in the correct part of the graph depending on the inequality. She caught on to this quickly. Next I taught her how to solve compound inequalities and then graph them on a number line. We went through the math terms for doing this as well. I left her with about 7 homework problems reviewing the new concepts we learned today."
"With both students, we reviewed their past exams. We also worked on combining like terms in an equation. I taught them factoring a simple equation and rules of dividing with exponents."
"The student was very responsive and focused during the session, and it was great working with him. We went over properties of parallel lines and angles as well as how to find slopes during this session."
