Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We covered the basics of ecology, including natural selection, the founder effect, and the bottleneck effect. We also went over Hardy-Weinberg problems."
"During this session, we began reviewing for an upcoming exam concerning blood vessels of the human body. We looked at differences between blood vessels and key words to associate with each. We began with arteries and worked towards veins. The student was doing well this time retaining the information when I asked questions throughout the session. This certain system has many confusing words that can get jumbled with other words. She paid attention the whole time and did let me know if she needed a concept repeated or explained in easier terms. I made sure to use examples such as a garden hose when discussing blood flow. I suggested that she rewrite the notes that she took tonight before our next session. In addition to this material, I made sure to discuss the past exam issues. I hope to have some practice problems for her during the next session."
"Today we covered the basics of Periodic Law and atomic structure. We focused mainly on electron configuration predictions, using the Periodic Table as a guide. The student was struggling on keeping the pattern of how the electron energy levels filled straight. The strategy we used to handle this particular material is based on the visual structure of the Periodic Table, specifically how the elements are already organized in the order in which their electron shells fill. By the end of the session, he was able to figure out the valence electron configuration of any element on the Periodic Table, provided he followed the pattern we outlined. He will need a little more practice before the method will become rote memory, but he made a big step towards that today."
