Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We worked on laws of arithmetic and did two timed math sections. I suggested that the student pick three questions per section not to answer. We also did a critical reading passage and sentence completions. I asked her to complete an essay, a math section, and a writing section for homework."
"Today was my last session with the student. We spent the first part of the session reviewing the sections she did for homework. She had the most trouble with math, so we spent time reviewing geometry and algebra concepts- especially the more abstract and visual math questions. We spent the second half of the session reviewing strategies for all 3 sections, and I told her to do light review the next few days."
"On this tutoring session, I reviewed more essay writing techniques with the student. She completed a considerable amount of work in her review book, going over grammatical techniques, tense agreement, subject-verb agreement, and other concepts. That made the review that much easier. We also read through 3 different essays that scored a 5 or higher. I explained to her that 3 body paragraphs are important, but one of them should be a counterexample to show that the student is considering different points of view and then subsequently addressing them. As far as the math section goes, the student understands my methods quickly and I rarely need to explain anything to her twice. She is a joy to work with and I recommended that she finish at least two math tests and mark the ones that she did not know how to approach/categorize."
"Today we covered plants and evolution and a short SAT II practice test. The student was excellent in both topics, but during the practice test we noticed he is not comfortable in physiology, so we will be going over physiology in the next session."
"This was our first tutoring session. We reviewed the three math sections in Test #1 of an SAT study guide, focusing on any questions that the student missed. We also practiced pre-writing skills for the essay question in Test #1. We will be working on geometry, numbers/operations questions, plus writing skills. The session went very well. Our next session will cover more writing and math skills."
"I worked with the student on reading comprehension. She did very well; we will not work on this again before the test unless her practice test this weekend goes poorly. She also took a math practice section and we went over the answers. I worked with another student on reading comprehension and the essay. We outlined an essay together and he made very strong points and showed good organization. He worked on a math section after that. Another student did a math practice session, which we then went over when she was finished. We will all meet again next week twice before their test."
"We did a section from both the reading and math sections. This was the first time that we did reading together, because he told me it was his strongest section. However, after yesterday's session I realize that we have a lot of work to do. We went over a plan and some strategies to study vocab since that appears to be a weak area. We also went over some passage based questions and talked about the type of analysis that is required to answer these questions correctly. In the math section, it's just a matter of him being more comfortable with basic math concepts."
"Today we were able to revisit all three topics on the test. The student had done quite a nice job on her homework, which was writing questions and math questions. As it stands now, we will be working mostly on reading and math henceforth. For next time, she will complete 1.5 reading sections and a math section."
"We initially went over critical reading, as that was the area the student felt was his weakest. We went over different testing techniques for that session, and found ways to alter his old habits to save time and allow for more complete understanding of the questions. After looking over his previous SAT results, I decided that focusing on math and writing was the most efficient way to proceed. We then did a short improving sentences section to see initially where he struggled. I will continue with writing in his next session"
"In this session, I introduced myself to the student and we talked about her goals for tutoring. She wants to focus on the Reading and Science portions of the ACT, because she feels like she has a handle on the Math and English. So, we went through some Reading and Science passages in the first practice test. The biggest obstacle that we will be working on is pacing. She has a good grasp of the concepts for the Reading and Science portions, but we need to work on being quicker. We worked out some strategies to do that and will continue to develop strategies in the future. She will look over the passages we didn't get to in the first practice test and come with questions for next time. No concerns from this session!"
"The student and I covered the questions he got wrong on his last practice test. We did strategies and practice for the dual passages reading. He did well on this, and understood the methods easily. We briefly went over some improving paragraphs strategies as review, but will need to do more of this on Tuesday."
"I thought we had an excellent session. The student took most of a practice SAT and her scores keep improving. We worked on math, writing, and critical reading today, and discussed some stray grammar rules and pragmatic math strategies. The SAT writing multiple choice and ACT English sections complement each other, so she will do practice ACT English, as well as SAT Math and Critical Reading for our next session May 7."
