Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Worked with the student on Verbal sections; synonyms and sentence completion. Went through basic techniques to use for answering questions with vocabulary she doesn't necessarily know. After, went through Geometry, but didn't finish all practice questions. For next week she should finish a practice test."
"Edited the student's paper rough draft, focusing how to prove main ideas better, extending commentary, and embedding quotations; worked geometry homework on polygon area, which also introduced some new trigonometry topics the student seemed to understand well."
"The student did a great job of incorporating more "vibrant" words (nouns, verbs, and modifiers) in his most recent homework assignment. This was a summary paragraph, which he remembered to focus on answering the 5 W's while keying in on the main details/events of the story. He also varied his sentence structure, started some sentences with adverbial phrases, and included transitions. We are going to work on transitions, main ideas, introductions, conclusions, and organizing essays and paragraphs differently for different types of writing assignments (i.e. expository, narrative, persuasive)."
"We met again to do more things with calculus. He had a related rates worksheet that we worked though. The problems were simple and after we worked together on a couple he was able to do the rest by himself."
"The student and I went over the information that will be covered on her prep test on Thursday. This included force, work, power, nuclear fusion/fission, and nuclear energy. We are also meeting again on Wednesday to go over her review packet and answer last minute questions. We also finished her mouse trap car."
"We went over topics for her exam, such as conic sections and drawing hyperbolas. She did not really understand the concept of shifting a graph but after explaining it for a few minutes, she understood."
"The student and I went through the review problems together for her test tomorrow on stoichiometry. After our session yesterday, she completed all the homework problems and turned those in today. She said she understood them and felt good about the material. She handled the review problems with ease and I hope that her hard work the past two days will show on her test."
"We met today to work on the student's assignment on anova. I gave her an overview of how anova builds on what we have done so far in her class by starting with one way anova, then two way anova, and within subjects anova, then multiple regression and multiple regression with dummy variables all leading to the convergence of anova, and multiple regression using both quantitative and dummy coded categorical variables as predictors. Like last week, we were able to show that the same results could be produced through the anova procedure and the multiple regression procedure. We made it through most of the assignment, and she will try to finish up the results section."
"The student and I worked on trig substitution and reviewed integration by parts. He has a quiz coming up that covers the new material and we will review integration by parts more before his upcoming test."
"Reviewed the math section the student had completed in his assessment test practice book. Concepts covered the most were algebraic equations, fractions, and percentages. He seemed to grasp those concepts well once taught, and was instructed to try the problems he got wrong again to see if he understands."
"In today's class, we talked about the animal names in Chinese. I took the picture books and show them how to pronounce different animals, they seemed to enjoy it a lot. we also learned a mandarin song. There were many other songs they like. I found songs can be an effective way of learning, since they were more familiar with numbers after they listened to the number song."
"Today we went over inequalities with radicals and absolute values. When I explained how to do it the student picked up on the concepts very well. Next time we will work with inverse functions and then we can put everything that we did together with graphing."
