Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Completed more worksheets for 2's, 5's, 10's. We checked off the facts that she knows on a chart to visually show how much she really does know. We will start to work on 11's and 2'3 next. We also discussed the nines and I showed her on the multiplication chart the pattern that the 9's make."
"Focused on reading comprehension and the writing multiple choice sections today. The student is very bright. He's attentive and quick to pick up on concepts, so I'm still seeing improvement within our sessions."
"In this session, the student and I continued work on her math course. We worked on lessons 1-4, covering graphing concepts, properties of functions, and a number of basic to intermediate algebra review subjects."
"We went over the student's religion homework and her Essay of the Week. I checked over her Essay of the Week and she studied formulas for surface area and volume of spheres/cylinders/square pyramids/triangular prisms/rectangular prisms. Her test will also cover area formulas for squares/rectangles/trapezoids/parallelograms/triangles. We looked at identifying some triangular prisms because those were the trickiest to visualize. The student made science flashcards over evolution and natural selection for a science test on Thursday."
"The student and I worked on his homework which involved using the quadratic equation to find x-intercepts when factoring cannot be used to find them. He had already memorized the equation from class and showed good use of the concept in our work together on both his homework worksheet and the problems in the book he was assigned."
"We did more English grammar (pronouns and antecedents), studied for a vocabulary test and spelling quiz, and went over Spanish homework (travel vocabulary). Also explained how notes must be recopied neatly in notebook everyday."
"We focused on academic tone and techniques to ensure that the student's writing is mature and suitable for an advanced audience. We practiced editing her work more intensely using some of these techniques. Her writing is progressing very well."
"The student and I worked on his upcoming speech and we followed the format given by his teachers and discussed ways to have an interesting opening and a thoughtful conclusion. We used index cards and made bullet points on all of the topics that he should address in a coherent order."
"The student has two essays due. I helped him structure his outline on fining producers of dangerous products using his teacher's guidelines, which is a relaxed version of the Jane Shaffer method. We discussed the thesis together and brainstormed the supporting details. By the end of the session, he had a complete and detailed outline. For his second essay, we had time only for composing the introduction paragraph on causes of US involvement in World War I with three supporting details. We set up an extra session Thursday to finish the essay."
"During this session, we reviewed the student's homework over Order of Operations. It was a review of concepts they had done in the previous quarter. I had brought practice sheets about ratios and we worked through those to reinforce the concepts and prepare him for his upcoming unit in math. The student had done fairly well in maintaining his planner. We discussed the importance of writing down assignments before leaving the classroom."
"The student worked on three digit subtraction. She is learning to add the two numbers she is subtracting and then subtract it from the bigger numbers. She did great when we practiced multi-digit multiplication. The only cue I gave her was in regards to slowing down and taking her time. When she did this she ended up with all the correct answers. We also discussed multiplication patterns including ending 0 patterns. She worked on adding with a number line. She also used markers so that she would understand the concept of adding in a more tangible way."
"Today we worked on the verb "estar" and also the present progressive. We practiced from many online assignments that the student had to complete. It was a good exercise reinforcing a lot of the vocabulary about vacation and free time activities."
