Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student completed a good amount of work since our last session. I checked through his work and I reviewed some concepts with him on a worksheet that his mom gave him. I explained the concepts on the worksheet to him. In particular, he struggled with rounding. I explained rounding to him and he was able to get all of the correct answers. After this, we went over borrowing and Roman numerals, as well as counting coins. He did a good job overall. Toward the end of the session, we played his arithmetic game."
"The student started with addition flash cards. He knew most of them. When he missed, he corrected himself. He had a double-sided math worksheet. His worksheet was on regrouping numbers to add. He had word problems that had too much info or not enough. He worked hard to do them and got them all right."
"We reviewed previous assessments for corrections and working through problems we needed extra help on. We focused on story problems, test-taking tips, and calculator use. The student is taking a test on this Tuesday, so on Monday evening we'll do prep and review."
"We looked over the student's homework packet for the upcoming exam and went over any of the problems that she couldn't do on her own. We then looked over the limit problems we discussed in the previous session. Most of the ones she had questions on involved using the trig functions and identities. She needs to work on memorizing these as well as practicing using algebra to rearrange the functions. This is where most of her errors were happening. We then looked over her previous exam and discussed problems she still had questions on."
"In today's session, we began working with inequalities. The student was given straightforward inequalities and asked to graph them on a number line. We moved into working with solving inequalities. At the end of the session we moved into solving word problems involving inequalities. She was able to increase her conceptual understanding of a the infinite qualities of a line, as well as the how the graph represented the possible solutions for an unknown quantity. Her conceptual understanding of this concept solidified significantly during today's session."
"Today we covered mathematical reasoning, the importance of the fundamental mathematical operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) and their relationship to each other, place value, base 10 number recognition, parts of a division statement, and multiplication facts. While she continues to start off slowly, her overall attitude towards the material and learning in general is very good. I provided her with some strategies on multiplying by ten and using this skill to help her with performing double digit multiplication operations, I also helped her with properly identifying place value and how to convert numbers from word to digit form. As a skill builder, I assigned her with the task of writing and expressing the 4's through 10's multiplication facts three times each. I did not get the chance to review any scores or grades to note her progress, but I encouraged her to provide weekly updates on her performance going forward. One big win from this session was her ability to verbalize her understanding of most of the key concepts covered.."
