Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"For the student's upcoming test, we worked on the problem of identifying a polygon given four coordinates. This requires finding the slopes of all sides using the slope formula and finding the length of each side using the distance formula."
"We began today's session by reviewing the skill of simplifying square roots, which we had worked on during the last session. Then, we practiced applying that skill to problems involving the quadratic formula, including some problems that I gave the student and some that were in his practice assessment exam. In addition to working on the quadratic formula, we also worked on using the graphing calculator to create regression equations. He was already familiar with linear regression, but not other types of regression. I taught him about quadratic and exponential regression. At the end of the session, we tried a few problems related to slope of graphs, and we will do some more of those in our next session as well as some other key skills that will be needed on the exam."
"The student has been working on unit nine (quadrilaterals) and had homework. She had a worksheet to work on, which we went over for roughly an hour. She also had an additional packet for homework that we went over for the remainder of the session. These generally revolved around the definitions of different quadrilaterals - parallelogram, trapezoid, rhombus, kite, rectangle, and square."
"The student came to me with a worksheet for transformations that he needed help with. We worked through it step by step and talked about the things that he had done well with and the places that he struggled with. He got a good start, but just needed help with some of the finer points, as well as understanding exactly what the teacher was asking for. Once we were able to clear up the instructions and add in a few lessons that he didn't quite grasp, he worked well and gained a much better understanding of the worksheet."
"We went over his notes on 10-6 and 10-7. I had the student finish the problems on his notes. We reviewed factoring quadratics and the quadratic formula since it came up in some of the problems. These later sections are more difficult."
"We discussed the angle bisectors, perpendicular bisectors, altitudes, and medians in the context of triangles. The student had trouble keeping all of the details of the definitions straight, so we focused on that in preparation for her quiz."
