Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student seems to have a good grasp on the information so we moved through the material pretty quickly. We started off the session by going over basic concepts regarding integers such as what it means to have a negative number, understanding absolute value and comparing them, and adding and subtracting with negative numbers. We did only a few of the problems regarding this topic from chapter 1 of his textbook since he seemed to have a strong understanding of the material. We continued to move along to chapter 2 of his textbook, dealing with rational numbers. We defined a rational number and worked through various problems converting fractions to decimals, simplifying fractions, and comparing fractions and decimals. Since he was doing very well with the basics we moved on to practicing order of operations. He was curious about negative exponents, so I explained to him the meaning of negative exponents and created a few problems for him. I also briefly introduced him to fractional exponents. He picked up both of these concepts very well. Finally, we finished up our session with a discussion of expressions and working through simplifying expressions."
"We covered topics about polynomial. The student is very smart, has a positive attitude and is willing to try. She doesn't appear to have much struggle in this first session, and we covered a lot. I found it helpful to help her identify different types of problems."
"Yesterday I feel like the student made good progress even though we only got through one math sheet, front and back. In the end, after working with the "breaking apart" method of multiplication for an extended period of time, he was able to explain it back to me in a simple way. This showed me that he had a grasp of the content because he was able to "teach" it to me. I thought this was awesome, and I was very proud of him!"
"We had to finish the linearization topics before our final review next time. The student had some issues in recognizing the user of the derivative function, but I think this time we cleared them out once and for all."
"Tonight was our first tutoring session. We worked through a few quick "get to know you" questions, talked about her progress in math, her recent grades and her goals. She worked through her homework, completing a worksheet on geometric figures, tables, diagonals and fractions. Then we moved on to "order of operations" and the PEMDAS acronym while preparing for the SSAT, working through a test prep book. She did a great job for our first session, is very motivated and is a fast learner! I'm looking forward to working with her more."
"I helped the student with a physics assignment and reviewing concepts on speed, velocity and how to use the formulas for velocity, distance, and time. I also reviewed her recent math quizzes to see where she is still struggling and wrote some notes for her mother to take to a meeting with her teachers. There are areas with working with negative numbers, fractions, showing her work (so she doesn't make simple mistakes), and basic multiplication errors. We will keep working on these during sessions."
