Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I were introduced, and she described the academic needs she has to get her GED. I gave her some basic math problems using different operations to see where her skills are and to identify any learning gaps she may have. We also spent time looking over some sample questions for the GED test. I have given her a list of websites to build her basic math knowledge. I am currently working to devise a curriculum for her to be successful on the test."
"We covered finding lowest common denominators, negative exponents, improper fractions, fractional equations, percent changes, ratios, and proportions. The student did well when I created problems for him to work out, and was left with extra practice problems from his textbook."
"I reviewed with the student for her upcoming test Tuesday. We worked on substitution as a strategy for solving inequalities. She also worked with the strategy for solving for one variable. In each case she used the y intercept formula to graph her solutions to her equation. She is doing a great job this afternoon."
"Today we talked about geometric reflections, translations, and rotations. A geometric reflection is when a figure in the xy plane is 'flipped' about either the x or y axis. I illustrated the idea by drawing a shape on both sides of a paper and flipping the paper over around one of its edges. The student seemed to understand the idea. A translation is when a figure is simply moved along the x or y axis. A rotation is when a figure is rotated about a fixed point, usually the (0,0) point on the xy plane. We practiced doing each of the transformations individually, and he was able to do each competently after some guidance. He got a bit mixed up when I asked him do perform a series of transformations on a figure (first rotate, then translate, then reflect). We'll work on that in our next session."
"Today we studied for finals that the student has coming up this week. We reviewed many vocab terms and concepts in preparation for multiple choice tests, and also did quite a bit of review of geography, complete with memory aids for the placement of countries so that she is able to do well on her human geography class."
"We went over the worksheet the student's turning in tomorrow, which was on monomials x polynomials. Her greatest weakness is combining like terms, so we made practice problems for each other and swapped taking them."
