Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We made good progress on the student's first lab on sorting. We went over mergesort and quicksort, and we implemented them as his existing code. He was bright and motivated. We will continue with mergesort in our next session."
"We reviewed the programs in preparation for the exam this week. We also implemented a stack using a linked list and an array. The student was able to explain pass by value and pass by reference and when to use each one. There were big wins during this session! He was able to implement the stack on his own and troubleshoot when problems occurred."
"We went over how to transfer data from files into arrays. We came across a problem with transferring the data. This forced us to use debugging skills in order to figure out what went wrong and solve the problem. The student is very grateful for learning how to debug a program to solve problems. I left him to apply this lesson to his homework assignment. I believe he learned a lot and will be able to complete his homework assignment."
"Concepts covered: Module-19:Introduction to Functions, Module-20:void Functions. Programming Example 23. Lab 8. Strategies included for Lab 8: To visualize loops by writing down each iteration. The student was finding Lab 8 really tough, but eventually he could solve it and understand it. He seemed delighted. He was persistent."
"Today, the student and I reviewed several C++ topics. After figuring out how to get a C++ project started on XCode, I asked her to code various short programs. These programs reviewed data types, printing to the console, getting user input, loops, nested loops, and arrays. Overall she did great on these assignments and they worked great for the review because it was hands-on practice. Finally, we went over how to debug a program. Even though we couldn't debug using XCode yet, we used Visual Studio to go over how it works. We will figure out how to use XCode's debug functionality for next time."
"During this session, I taught the student the content of his 30th module on the string class. He said that he was understanding at each step, though we did have to go quickly."
