Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We covered the reading and writing sections in today's session. We worked on practice questions from a question database and other sources online. The student struggles with some of the main idea questions in the reading section. To help with that I had her practice reading for tone and main idea on the practice passages. The student also struggles with some of the vocab in the SAT. The only way for her to score higher on the fill-in-the-blank section would be to increase the number of vocab words she knows. I suggested she look up SAT word lists online and memorize those. In the writing section the student struggles with several of the grammar rules (subject/object, tenses, parallelism, and agreement). She became better at applying those rules after I explained the rules and we practiced more questions."
"Today we covered SAT math - algebraic functions, numerical operations; SAT critical reading - social science/history passages, paired passages; and SAT writing - essay feedback, writing topic sentences, improving sentences, improving paragraphs, identifying sentence errors. For extra practice, the student will finish essay prompt #4, improving sentences/paragraphs practice questions."
"The student and I began this session by going over a critical reading passage. He got every question right in good time. Next, we went over a practice essay the student had written. The essay had excellent structure, but I asked the student to work on coming up with examples from more diverse sources, perhaps by having a mental example bank ready on the day of the test. We then reviewed some areas of math that we had yet to cover, and finished off by taking another look at two-blank vocabulary questions."
