Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student had a test the previous day we hadn't had time to review for, and while he did better than most of the year, this score was in the low 60's. He didn't have that test with him, but we went over the review sheet to discuss what he missed. Part of the material seemed to be review from the first part of the year that I haven't gone over with him yet, as we've spent most of our sessions trying to prepare him to pass his current exams. We went over that, as well as his new assignments. The good news, however: he passed the class for the quarter."
"The student has a EOTC test tomorrow, so we just reviewed for that. We went over any given parabola and finding its vertex, focus, and directrix. We also covered imaginary and complex numbers. We went over congruent and similar triangles, finding areas, perimeters, and volumes. We went over transformations in the coordinate plane, the slope of a regression line, and using the quadratic formula. We reviewed the Pythagorean theorem and trigonometry identities."
"The student received a study guide for her final exam in geometry, so after a few warm-up problems, we spent the entire session going over the study guide. I would say she has a strong grasp of the concepts and especially the rules that she needs to know to do well in the course. This is encouraging, as it shows that she is dedicated to doing well in the course, so effort is not the issue. I encouraged her to tackle geometry problems by just writing down everything that she knows given the information and the rules she has learned. With only a little bit of prodding, she was able to solve all of the problems with relative ease. We went over almost the entire geometry curriculum today, leaving off at volume and surface area problems. Over the next few sessions, we will tackle the subjects in more detail and reinforce her conceptual understanding of the subject. I gave her a few practice problems in volume and will prepare a more in-depth curriculum for her in the near future."
"The student and I went through his last test and looked over the problems that he had questions on. He went through his homework for the weekend."
"Today we went over proofs for complementary and supplementary angles. She was able to do several sample problems on her own by the end of the session. She has a quiz on proofs tomorrow. She will be working with her flash cards tonight to make sure she has memorized her theorems."
"The student is doing better with proofs. I think it will help him to start making a list of all the theorems and postulates as he learns them, kind of a master list that he can refer to when he needs the formal name for the step. Starting to build that now and just adding to it will make proofs a little bit easier."
