Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I began covering our third section: reading. We were able to review the first two types of passages: prose writing and social studies. Her performance was variable: certain passages she would do flawlessly, but others passages were a challenge to the student. My sense is that further practice will help her to perform more consistently."
"We reviewed the student's essay from Test 3. We discussed counter arguments and ways to improve the essay. I also revised her sentences and definitions for another 70 vocabulary words. We closed out by reviewing her practice writing and verbal sections in Test 3."
"We had a session on admissions test prep, mostly in the reading sections. Both boys put in good effort. They both still seem to have good reasoning ability in the language sections, though their vocabulary can be a bit limited. At the end of this session, the first student asked me to help explain a chemistry concept. I looked through his notes and was able to clarify it using the papers and charts he had with him. I believe he said that this wasn't for a graded assignment, this was just for personal knowledge now that he has finished the class."
"We started off by looking at the science section that the student completed for this week. After looking at the problems that she answered incorrectly and another new science section, it seems that she can improve her score significantly by recognizing patterns and subtle differences in the details of each experiment. She has to make sure that her process of answering is still effective by checking her answers."
"We went through flashcards of math questions, focusing specifically on algebra this session. There were some issues with recall of material, though as we went through it her confidence clearly grew. I am going to send some practice problems tonight so that we can tailor the next session more closely to her needs."
"The student's reading has really improved. Her only consistent problem is the vocabulary section. She is utilizing good strategies though. We spent more time on the math section. I have seen her a couple times have trouble understanding exactly what the question is asking. She sometimes misinterprets the question. We have also reviewed her comfort with fractions."
"We reviewed the two sections she did for homework, and the student did really well on the math questions that she able to finish-- she got 45 of the first 49 correctly. We decided that she should only try to attempt the first 50-55 questions from now on and use educated guesses on the last 5. We are meeting tomorrow from 4-6pm."
"We worked on sentence completion and especially focused on identifying the tone of a word and how that may fit into the tone of a sentence. We looked at shifter words as well that change the tone in a sentence. We also examined some passages using the online learning resources which was very helpful! I would like to work more on the effect and purposes of phrases in passages."
"Good first session! We were able to cover all three sections (reading in less detail). The student seems to be good at picking up things. He needed a bit of review of a few math concepts (lengths of sides of triangles) but is able to employ most things successfully. In writing, we went over basic concepts, like looking for verb tense, singular vs. plural, parallel structure. In reading, we went over the idea of strategically planning which questions to answer first. I'm looking forward to continuing with him. For next time, he has a bit of work in each section."
"This was my first session with the student. We went over some basic Physics, Chemistry, Algebra, Trigonometry, and Geometry to assess her weak points. Both her and her mother stated to me that she really need work with Math and that she scored well in the other subjects, especially English and Writing. I have asked her to purchase a test prep book to facilitate the learning process and to give her the ability to complete quality, authentic practice problems in order to really learn the material. I should be meeting with her this coming weekend."
"The student worked a full math test today. We went over with how to double-check the answer choice and how to read the questions carefully. Furthermore, we talked about how to go through the test fast and accurately. I also told him to practice as much as he can to get ready for the test and the student seems to be confident in doing well on the exam."
"Today we focused on the English section as well as reviewing the reading section that I gave him for homework. His reading section has improved but there is still more work to do so I will be assigning him more reading sections for homework every time we meet. The English section that he took today he improved another 3 points. His biggest problem is recognizing comma splices, but with more grammar studying he will continue to improve. Next time we will do math but I also gave him homework to do a science section before we meet again."
