Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Looked over the Practice Test, which was mostly completed within the hour she timed herself with. While she performed better than on the diagnostic test, most of her mistakes this time came from kinematics/mechanics. After asking her questions to help guide her and having her look over the problems more, she was able to answer them more effectively. We went over the entire exam, and I answered questions where she had concerns, such as right hand rules, circuits, and more mechanics. I left her with another practice exam, and told her to brush up on mechanics more. Either next session or the one after I will be doing practice exams with her to see how she takes the exam and help her with testing methods. Overall she is steadily improving and shows promise."
"The student and I met online, and the session went well. We jumped into the second practice test in the prep book and did the reading section. She struggled at first, but she quickly improved and started pinpointing textual evidence to support her answer choice. She should definitely try to "convince me of the answer" so she's positive she has the right answer. We then did a few Math questions in the practice ACT. We scheduled a session for next Monday from 4-6 pm. Her assigned homework is the English, Math, and Reading sections in the practice test. She should time herself and mark how far she got within time and then spend time completing the rest of the questions. On Monday, we'll review the homework and then, if we have time, finish questions 21-40 in the Reading section of practice test 2 in the ACT book."
"This is our last session before the student goes to take the ACT. We focused on English because she wanted a bit more practice in this area. The student completed a practice session and some additional drills. She did well and her overall confidence seems to be improving."
"The student and I did a scattershot of SAT tricks and tips to help improve her score for her next practice test, which is due in a week. This included learning about pivot words, a basic geometry review, and looking for the shortest answer when improving sentences."
"This was one of my final sessions with the student so we went over the major concepts for each section of the ACT to make sure he feels confident with the majority of the material. He continues to do amazingly well on the English and science sections so we did not spend too long on those. We instead focused on certain math problems that I had hand-selected for him as well as some prose fiction passages."
"The student and I turned to the Critical Reading portion of the test today. I reviewed a variety of methods by which she might do some good vocabulary acquisition over the coming months. She has time so it's worth putting some words in the bank. The rest of the time we spent reviewing practice Critical Reading sections to address patterns in questions and information placement. Her math and writing scores have come along nicely, and the CR portion is the biggest chunk of the test left to master."
"The student and I reviewed her answers from homework. We also reviewed her essay. She needs to state her thesis emphatically and make her thesis statement tighter. We also have to work on concluding each paragraph to transition to the next paragraph. For homework, she is to complete Test 7 - 6 and 9 and the essay."
"The student and I worked on reviewing and correcting some of her practice sections. She is making great improvements in the number of questions that she is getting right in each section, and her speed is increasing as well. She will also be taking the ACT in October and may need help reviewing for that exam as well. She will finish a practice essay and several practice sections before our next meeting."

"The student and I began going over the reading section of the admissions test. I gave him some advice about budgeting his time, and we then practiced reading through three of the reading passages under time constraints. He had some difficulty finishing the questions for each passage in time. He should continue to work on improving his reading speed to make sure he can finish all of the passages in the reading section. For next session, he will complete one section of reading and one of English in his test prep book, and we will discuss how it went and how well he did under the time limit. During the second part of our session, we worked on questions from the science section. He did well in this section, and was able to compare and make inferences form multiple experiments. During the last part of our session, we worked on factoring and foiling expressions, two important concepts for the math section."
"We went over what the student thought were her weaknesses: science and math. After running through the concepts briefly, I realized that she did not have a good foundation in trigonometry so we basically did a basic trigonometry 101 session. We went through the practice problems on the website and I gave her some trig identities to go over and memorize before our next session on Saturday. Overall great session!"
"We went over a few differences between the two test, and then looked at a practice Science section on C3 and started going over strategies for the science portion. More practice sets upcoming."
