Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I reviewed for his chapter 11 test, which is tomorrow. We reviewed square root concepts, distance formula and midpoint formulas as well as using the Pythagorean theorem. The student seemed very comfortable using these concepts and I expect him to do well on his test tomorrow. I encouraged him to get a copy of the previous test so that we can review it prior to his upcoming math final. The student did a great job of concentrating today and was able to get through his whole math review guide in our session. He's doing great!"
"For our last session before the student takes the SSAT next Saturday, we reviewed her latest math practice section, focusing on fundamental geometry (e.g., interior angle measures of common polygons) and algebra concepts. We then reviewed the test-taking strategies we had previously covered for each section of the test and talked briefly about strategies for the essay section."
"We worked on the English section today, where she needs the most improvement. We reviewed the concepts the ACT covers and discussed in more depth any concept the student had trouble with. We made a reference sheet (with rules and examples of them) for her to use to really hammer down those concepts. We practiced half of a practice test."
"I reviewed what the student had been learning for the past week, mostly focusing on the Pythagorean theorem and various applications of it. He did great when it came to solving the equations, plugging in numbers etc."
"Met with the student and reviewed her prior test scores and areas needing focus. Vocabulary review will be a strong focus. The student also needs to review Eastern Civ. Next lesson we will begin looking at research methods."
"During this session I had the student teach me content from two of her classes. We started with pre-calculus, in which she had a study guide. She talked me through it and explained how to figure out problems, while also marking problems she didn't understand. Next, she told me about her English class and the novel they were going to be tested over. We had a brief discussion over the two courses and talked about the two for our next meeting. She definitely has the content down, and continues to build on her focus and organization."
"Topics covered with the first student include reviewing for an English final (literary terms, plot diagram terms, and vocabulary). Progress achieved was an understanding of all terms and vocabulary in relation to the book Of Mice and Men. Topics covered with both students for their biology final include basic scientific vocabulary, photosynthesis, cellular respiration, and various diagrams. Progress achieved was refreshing and quizzing over all biology terms and a clearer understanding of biology diagrams."
"This session the student and I talked a bit more about essay planning and writing strategies. I tried to emphasize the necessity of really practicing on this section before taking the test, otherwise he would find himself tackling a much greater challenge. We then covered a math section that proved to be a breeze for him, which after the tough essay was a nice change. Finally we went through a writing section, which he is also steadily improving on, and then covered some vocabulary flash cards."
"Went over the student's review addressing any issues he had with solving problems given. Also outlined a study plan for the student in regards to his upcoming test to help keep what we went over fresh in his mind. Also outlined for his mother what he would be starting next and what to expect with it."
"Today we went over Pre-Calculus since her test is coming up. We reviewed all her old test and quizzes. The student knows what she did wrong and explained to me how she is going to correct her mistakes. She should do well this semester."
"Today we worked through a math section in one of the practice tests for the ACT. This gave a comprehensive review of the subjects on the math portion of the exam. She needed a refresher on some of the concepts, but overall seemed to know her math. We also briefly covered the science section, the types of questions involved in it and some sample problems."
"We worked on expanding journal writing from one sentence to one paragraph using our 5 senses. We also worked on place value, adding 2 digit numbers carrying over, telling time, coin values, and counting coins."
