Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"For the first hour, the student read a short story and then answered questions that followed. Once he completed this, I had him read the text out loud to me, so I could check his answers before I viewed the answer sheet. For the last hour, he completed his pre-writing for his new essay prompt that he has to complete for me before our next session."
"The student's parents' main concern is his reading comprehension and critical reading skills. He just started a new book for English class which they read aloud in class. He and I reread the chapter together, stopping to discuss as we went along. My goal is to model the process of critical reading for him. I stopped the reading often to discuss what happened in the text. This teaches him to stop and think/ question while reading. This strategy helps him to check for comprehension, but it also allows for me to encourage him to think more deeply about the text. We discussed the relationship between the two main characters as well as figurative language (namely, similes and metaphors) and foreshadowing. I think this first session went very well and I look forward to working with him more in the future!"
"-We discussed early problems with reading, how it's affecting other classes and subjects, and tried to gain a better understanding of what we need to focus on most closely. -We discussed annotation and how to make connections to what she is reading."
