Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I worked on simplifying algebraic expressions, e.g. (x-1)(x+1)-->x^2-1. We're still feeling each other out, but he's clearly a fast learner--he had no experience in this area, but picked it up pretty much immediately."
"The activities we did were about comparing fractions, as well as adding and subtracting fractions. The things that she understands are fun for her. She does not enjoy when she gets confused. One thing that is really confusing her right now is converting improper fractions to mixed numbers. I will continue to work with her on this next week so that they too can be fun!"
"We went over about 40 pages in the book today, covering addition/multiplication again. The student did a lot of practice today and, at the end, I timed him on around 15 division/multiplication questions. He is still very good, and he remembers his multiplication table."
"On Wednesday, we covered fractions and went over the study guide for the student's test. We started the session with multiplication tables of 1s, 2s, and 3s. We reviewed how to determine whether a fraction was less than, equal to, or greater than another fraction using the fraction line or the chart. She needed help with converting improper fractions to proper fractions, so we went over that carefully. She was motivated to learn and excited when she got answers correct. The strategies I used were repetition as well as visual learning and computer games. Her favorite is the computer games. I left her with a few questions on her study guide to continue to practice. She felt more confident with comparing fractions and was becoming more efficient at adding and subtracting fractions."
"I worked on reading comprehension with the student. She had homework to do, and I gave her strategies for eliminating possible options so that she could pick the best option. She was very excited that she took a test and did very well on it, and she was proud to show me. I asked her real world questions about perimeter and area, and I did that by playing with trains. I am happy with the progress that she is making."
"Today, the student and I worked on geometrical figures and fractions. We also worked on shape characteristics. Her attitude was very positive."
