Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We worked on studying for the student's upcoming finals and I encouraged him to continue to do so to keep up his great grades. I'm very proud of the progress he has made!"
"During this last session exponents were briefly gone over; as well as every other topic that was tutored from every other session."
"Today we worked on factoring and using quadratic formula to find roots in situations where factoring does not provide nice integers."
"The student had a quiz the past Thursday. He said that he got a B+ on the quiz. He got a worksheet packet on factoring polynomials. There was a section on finding the greatest common factor (of the coefficients and with variables). He and I discussed finding the greatest common factor and by the end of the worksheet he started to get the hang of it. There was then a large section on factoring polynomials into binomial form. He says that they have been learning the 'fish' method for doing this, so I had him teach me this method. We then continued to practice factoring polynomials. He eventually became a bit more fluid in this skill and finished the worksheet. I used this opportunity to move onto the next topic in the chapter, finding roots of a quadratic equation. This piggy backs off of factoring, as once you've factored into binomial form it is simple to find the roots due too the zero multiplicative property. We did a few problems to demonstrate this, and he seemed to grasp this concept very quickly. Finally, we ended our session with a short introduction to perfect square trinomials and completing the square. We will practice completing the square method to solving equations on Thursday."
"The student and I began this session by discussing his performance on his Chapter 12 test, which he found to be pretty easy when he took it. As we had predicted, the test did not require him to construct a histogram or box-and-whisker plot. Instead, it only tested his ability to interpret these graphs. After this, we began reviewing for part 1 of his two part final. The first part of this final will test older material from Chapters 7 and 8, which involved exponents and factoring. For chapter 7, we spent a few minutes recapping the ideas behind basic functions of exponents, then spent some more time going into the finer points of exponential functions and recursive and explicit formulas for sequences. Although it had been some time, he had a general understanding of these concepts and most of this material was meant as a refresher. Afterwards, we began working through chapter 8. Fortunately, he had a solid understanding of all of these concepts since later chapters would draw heavily on this material. The only sections we delved further into were those of special products such as perfect squares or differences of squares. I ended the session by assigning him a series of questions drawn from across the chapters."
"The student and I worked on systems of equations problems. We covered fraction division, properties of real numbers (associative, commutative, and distributive), and finally system of linear equations. She has made great strides in her work and understanding. She is able to solve much more of the problems on her own now."
