Tutoring review by Matthew in Akron, NY
The student and I reviewed the Unit Circle and Trigonometry Functions in preparation for her quiz tomorrow. The student responded well to instruction and seems to understand the concepts generally, though she sometimes gets caught up on sign changes or has trouble remembering some of the facts that need to be memorized (e.g. csc pairs with sin and sec pairs with cos) The student made good use of the tip that instead of memorizing all the pertinent angle points around a unit circle in both degrees and radians, she can do a quick conversion from degrees to radians (or vice versa) if she knows one and not the other. She also was able to do some of the trig function problems faster after we did some drills, so that should alleviate her concern that time might be a factor for completing her quiz.

The student and I covered a recap lesson of Algebra II material in preparation for PreCalculus and Trigonometry. He is good with mental math, and just needed prompting on the concepts for solving equations, graphing functions, etc. I look forward to working with him more. The student and I will continue working on his packet to get him caught back up to speed.

The student and I covered graphing exponential equations and figuring out how they shift when adding/subtracting from the exponent or the entire equation, and how they flip with negatives in the exponent or the coefficient. She had a much better grasp on the concept of shifting/flipping the graph after our discussion. We then moved on to Spanish, where we covered adjectives, comparatives, and superlatives, which did not seem to be any trouble for the student.

The student showed me his chapter 8 test, and he earned a 96%! Then, we reviewed his homework assignments from sections 9.1-9.5, and we corrected any of the problems marked wrong. I then introduced sections 9.6 and 9.7, which consisted of 'adding fractional parts of 10 and 100' and 'comparing decimals and fractions of 10 and 100'. The student expressed 100% confidence with these topics. We concluded with our multiplication review for his "March Madness" competition at school.

The student and I are focusing on the writing portion of the SSAT. He is a great test-taker; his mom and dad want to strengthen his writing. He has a tendency to write fast and sloppy; we are working on making his writing more technical and focus on mechanics and using details. He struggles in some areas, but I believe that he will improve over time.

Tutoring review by Charu in Akron, NY
Today, the student and I went over the question set that I designed her for homework. She did well. I advised her to take the other two questions, so that we could see how she is doing overall. We also went over a lot of test taking strategies, including some general mistakes that students tend to make while taking standardized exams. We then went over calculator skills, and how they can be used to make test taking more efficient. She seems very enthusiastic about the entire process and has been putting in a lot of effort. I am pleased with her progress, and I expect her to improve even further as the weeks go on.
