Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This was a good session. We began with Student M and covered laws of exponents and dealt with exponents raised to exponents as well as division of complex monomials. We then reviewed our previous sessions orally covering number sets (whole, integer, rational, and irrational), systems of equations, and square and cube root problems. To begin with Student J we identified composite and prime numbers and made lists as such like counting all of the primes to 50. We then defined multiples of numbers and used this new vocabulary to add, subtract, or evaluate inequalities of fractions. In this way we used multiples to find common denominators. We briefly discussed improper fractions."
"During our session, the student and I covered some concepts from 2nd grade math ranging from 3-digit subtraction, multiplication and grouping problems, and word problems. We then moved on to 4 digit subtraction and 2-digit by 1 digit and 3 digit by 1 digit multiplication. He did great with the concepts from 2nd grade and did well with most of the multiplication."
"The student and I started by reviewing some of the processes we worked on the last session (product, quotient, and chain rule) which he solved correctly. We then spent the lesson reviewing the topics we've covered over the past few weeks so that he could walk into calculus remembering some key principles. This includes finding limits given a graph/ polynomial/ rational expression, the definition of a derivative, and trigonometric principles. We concluded the lesson with drawing the derivative function, in which the student identified some key principles on his own (such as minimum/ maximum points occur at derivatives of 0)."
"Yesterday, we reviewed improper fractions and mixed numbers. We also went over long division which the student said he needed some help on. Once I reminded him the process of long division, he mastered it. We then started doing some algebra practice. He has just barely started algebra in school so we are starting from the beginning. Next time I will review his writing assignments and we will continue with algebra."
"This session the student and I reviewed a bit from last week (inequalities, compound inequalities, word problems, etc.) and moved forward to absolute values, solving equations with absolute terms, multiple solutions, extraneous solutions, graphing absolute equations, tolerance, and word problems including inequalities with absolute value terms. We completed the first chapter of his iPad textbook. We talked about the pace at which we're currently going and how he's comfortable with learning the new material. However, with 10 more chapters in his book and knowing his sessions are nearing an end, we discussed taking a peek into future chapters to introduce him to a few topics he'll learn about this fall semester to give him a head start. He still has a positive attitude and is a pleasure to work with."
"I helped the student prepare for the upcoming algebra 2 state assessment exam by going over problems from previous years' exams. She was very receptive, and by the end of the session she was able to solve the problems correctly."
