Tutoring review by William in Melrose, NY
I had prepared a list of five assignments: two in English, two in history, and one in health for this afternoon. All of these are long past due and are also sequential, so it is important that the student complete these as soon as he possibly can. He worked with me to complete one of the history assignments and, by doing this together, I was able to see his thought process. I was also able to see how he responds to some of the tools I have been putting in place, and it was helpful to discover what worked. A huge success was that he revised an assignment and we submitted it together. We have only had this level of cooperation and collaboration once before in the time I have been tutoring him. Another significant development was that he asked me to write an email to his English teacher, but then decided he would attempt to answer his own question. Still, the initiative he expressed in seeking guidance from his teacher is a positive step. We have discovered, by trial and error, that some of these assignments require multiple steps, for example, accessing a separate site, then receiving a report and downloading it into a document for submission. It would have been beneficial had he been aware of all the moving parts required to submit his assignments earlier, because omitting or skipping these means he has to revisit them more than necessary. One of the tasks that he has over-looked calls for him to submit annotated notes based on his reading. These notes should be a combination of answers to questions that are embedded in the material itself, for example, an extract from the novel War of the Worlds, and his conclusions about questions that he himself generates. To facilitate this, I am extracting the questions from the reading and have created a separate document for him to record answers. He can then submit this document when he has completed an entire lesson. I left three assignments for him to complete between today and our next meeting. I am looking forward to seeing the progress that he makes.

Tutoring review by Danielle in Melrose, NY
Today we went over identifying functions and deciding what constitutes a function and what doesn't. I showed her the vertical line test, which is an easy way to determine that. For the most part, she knew exactly how to do her homework, but I did show her how to make a T-table to plot points in case she is unsure of how to draw a specific graph. We then worked on inputting numbers into various functions, and she seemed very confident by the end of it.

The student completed a diagnostic test this past week, and it showed that he needed to work on trig and plane geometry. We went over both in detail today, covering plane geometry with online materials and trig using his prep book and explaining in detail. We then covered some more assorted practice tests.

Tutoring review by Andrew in Melrose, NY
We did a final check-in and review of English, reading, and science, trying to go over all the types of questions the student had struggled with, and just reinforcing the fact that she is well-prepared. Most importantly, make sure to read the questions thoroughly, so as not to choose whatever answer you think seems right. Really look at the question and find the answer that fits that particular question. Otherwise, you have nothing to fear!
