Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student worked on finishing his first full practice test. We reviewed the answers, discussed questions he missed, and scored his test. He is doing very well in writing and math but still requires a little work on critical reading. Next session he will have completed a second practice test and will review vocabulary."
"We continued to practice for the SAT. We reviewed sections she completed for homework and I explained all the questions she had trouble with. We started working with a new book and went through several sections of a practice SAT, starting by outlining an essay response and working on sentence completions and math."
"The student is improving in critical reading - on her latest practice test she only missed 4 answers, 2 of which she had chosen to skip. Besides vocabulary, paired passages seem to pose the most trouble, so we did some practice with these using the learning tools. She has learned another time-saving strategy, which is to focus on only the information given or asked for in each question - attempting to use information from the passage as a whole can often complicate the elimination process, and in fact can lead to a wrong answer when a question is asking for a specific quotation's function in the context of the essay. In addition, we made our way through a deck of common SAT vocabulary words, which was a helpful exercise - while she often had a feel for the meaning of a word from its common usage, she was not often sure of a direct synonym or definition, so our process was to solidify or simplify these words into working definitions that could expedite sentence completion problems."
