Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, we used a 5th grade textbook I recommended to the student. We tackled some word problems in operations like multiplication, addition, and division. I helped him with setting up word problems as equations so it is easier to understand what is being solved. The second hour focused on English. We reviewed parts of speech and identified how nouns are used in sentences, types of nouns and how to effectively use them in sentences. He responded well to tutoring today and had no observable areas of difficulty."
"The student had some language arts homework about identifying the cause and effect in sentences. We also reviewed his math, working on rounding and multiplying decimals. We practiced word problems with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. He then worked on his reading comprehension where he had to read a short story and then answer questions, without being able to look back at the story, and to work on memory alone."
"I talked with her mom, and she currently has C's in most of her classes. We're working to see if we can bring those grades up. During this session we completed a social studies worksheet then did a review for her social studies test that she is taking today. She works really hard, and I think feels good about the things we accomplished."
"The focus of tonight's session was preparation for the student's final exam in math. Prior to my arrival, she had completed most of the review packet provided by her instructor, but needed help with the questions related to circles. She made flashcards for the terminology associated with the topic and we talked through the issues that she had. We worked through the practice problems from her instructor, clearing up confusion as we went. She did very well with the problems and was planning to review more after I left. I also left several worksheets with her to continue practicing."
"We worked on studying tactics for his English final. We focused on reviewing his study guide and doing additional research online. We defined different components of sentences which include: complex/compound sentences, reflective/intensive pronouns, appositive, direct/indirect subjects, prepositions, finite verbs, predicate nouns, and more. We focused on finding these components within sentences and coming up with tips to help the student remember for his final."
"Met with the student today from 5:45-7:00 p.m. He had several homework assignments so we worked on those. He said that he has met his reading goal and they are still reading "Island of the Blue Dolphins" in class."
