Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We went over problems that the student got wrong on her first midterm. She was pretty happy with her grade. We spent the rest of the session discussing oscillatory motion. We focused on the definitions of amplitude, period and frequency. We compared pendulums and springs. I clarified how to get the period from graphs, which she found very helpful. It was a great session!"
"Today we went over two of the student's most recent homework assignments. She was out of school last week when the first homework was reviewed, so we wanted to ensure that she understood how to find the correct answers. This new semester, physics is moving into electricity. While we will still be aware of past areas for improvement, a new issue unique to electricity is doing a lot of calculations with large numbers. This week we focused mostly on simplifying problems involving electric charge, but we also tackled a few review problems from mechanics (largest lesson - separate movement on x and y axes for mechanics calculations)."
"We covered gravitational forces between objects in space and moments of inertia. We went through several homework problems which dealt with universal law of gravitation (moon and earth, asteroids, etc.). We touched on moments of inertia, and the concept of rotational axis of inertia. The student had a few example problems which asked for her to draw a "sketch" of some simple machines (screwdriver, pliers, scissors, etc.) and describe input and output forces and inertias, and mechanical advantages. The student mentioned that she received a 94% on her last Physics exam. This was a great improvement!"
