"The student wanted to practice balancing reactions as he found that difficult in class. I started with some simple chemical reactions that were easy to balance. I explained that It easier to keep track if you separate each compound into its elements and count them that way. The student seemed to find that helpful. After we did the simple equations, we moved on to some more complex problems, that required a little more work to balance. The student got the hang of it rather quickly, and he was able to notice certain patterns that reoccur in many different reactions. In particular he noticed that an odd number of oxygens on one side of the reaction is going to require and odd coefficient on the other side of the reaction. By the end of the session the student was feeling very confident in his ability to balance equations."
"Student performed very well on his last quiz. Today we began the next unit that included classifying different bacteria by shape, size, and clustering pattern as well as laboratory techniques to determine different types of bacteria such as Gram staining. At the end, he was given a mock quiz and performed very well."
"We covered the following concepts: importance of heat fusion, specific heat, change of temperature, and interpreting calorimetry graphs. The student grasped the concepts well and said she enjoyed learning the material. She currently has an A- and aims to get her grade up to an A."
