"This session the student and I went over his homework from last week, which covered compound and complex sentences, as well as subjects and predicates. He did well at deciphering between sentence fragments and complete sentences, as well as noting what parts of speech the fragments were lacking. He had a bit more trouble coming up with his own complex sentence examples, so we worked on that more until he understood and was able to form his own complex sentences. We also reviewed the subject and predicate of a sentence. The next topic we went over was structuring paragraphs. I had him do an exercise where he rearranged the sentences within a paragraph to be the most logical. He did really well at identifying the topic sentences and supporting evidence. For homework, I assigned him the review pages at the end of chapter 1, which are pretty comprehensive of what we've gone over the past few weeks, and also to write 5 complex sentences."
"Last night we covered several math concepts. We began by reviewing his test. Hopefully he understands surface area and what went wrong on the test now. We then did some more review on worksheets I brought in, just to make sure he is remembering everything from last semester. We ended with a tiny bit of reading (he loves those books)."
"The student and I focused heavily on understanding words in context and applying strategies to discern meaning from unknown words. We also focused on theme and how analysis and understanding of a theme can lead to greater overall comprehension."
