Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"For the first 30 minutes, the student and I reviewed his assignment from school. The student is working on poetry analysis, and we discussed what a poetry analysis is and how to recognize certain literary devices. For the last 30 minutes, I had the student read and analyze a poem. Next, he answered the short answers that followed. I left some poems and analysis questions for him to answer."
"The student and I worked together to prepare for his test on ancient Egypt. The student needs help to organize and understand the material. The student is grading in the 70s, and he has the ability to score better."
"We started in on his summer reading book. We continued to focus on reading aloud, reading comprehension, vocabulary, and answering reading-based questions in complete sentences. His ability to read aloud has improved greatly. His reading is smoother, and he is able to sound out words better too. We will continue to mix short sessions of reading aloud into his overall reading practice. He has also improved at writing in complete sentences. We are working on the concept of including part of the question into the first part of the answer to make it a complete sentence and show understanding of what is being asked. He does still need help with formulating ideas based off what he is reading. He continues to use the dictionary to look up words that he does not know. He is skilled at sounding out words that are unfamiliar to him. I left him with instructions to read the remainder of chapter two and all of chapter three then complete the sections of his summer packet that pertain to those chapters."
"Student A and I read from her Frozen book. We zipped through several chapters, stopping to define and use new words in additional sentences. Student B and I worked on long division. We discussed some shortcut rules to remember and applied long division in word problems."
"We worked on reviewing the student's math skills. His multiplication and division of multi-digit numbers has improved greatly since we last met, and I would like him to keep working on memorizing his times tables and using mental math."
"I met the student for the first meeting today. We went over introductions and expectations for the tutoring relationship. We then did introductory writing exercises to determine progress and goals. We worked on varying sentence starters and conventions."
