"Today we worked on word problems as well as reviewing several topics previously covered. Both girls did very well. I assigned them practice problems."
"The student and I tackled the somewhat advanced topic of how to solve systems of equations. I taught her two strategies for solving (using elimination and substitution), and she worked through a couple of examples using both strategies. We also talked about what a solution of a system of equations looks like graphically, and verified answers by graphing lines. This was a topic she had seen briefly before, but had had very little practice with, so it was essentially new material. She was able to follow along conceptually, but needed a bit of help in solving the problems. She did very well for her first try at this difficult material, and we will continue to practice until she gets it."
"We went over the student's chapter review questions for homework and did some extra questions on solving equations with rational denominators."
"Today, we looked at an assignment that the student had over graphing quadratic equations. He was unused to some of the work; most notably converting from standard to vertex form. Once we went over the different methods he could use, he found one that suited him best and used it to correctly rearrange and graph the equations in the assignment. On multi-part problems, he occasionally had difficulty concentrating on the progression from step to step and would make some mistakes as a result, but he was able to catch most of them before moving on. At the end I asked him to describe the general format of vertex form and what each component meant, and he did so correctly."
"We discussed the student's algebra project. She has to draw a picture and use that picture to write 10 equations for lines and quadratic functions. I showed her how she can find the equations by using the picture and values. She understood how she has to do them. Then I explained the log properties and used some examples to make them more clear. She understood them as well. She is doing great and will complete the project on her own."
"We reviewed solving systems of equations by substitution and simple elimination. We then looked ahead at elimination through multiplication and graphing systems of inequalities. She then preferred to solve all systems of equations by elimination through multiplication."
