"Today, we played a game in which the student could earn "wildcards" for playing multiplication war by completing tasks. The student did a timed multiplication test of the 5's times tables, which she completed easily and quickly, and this earned her two cards (1 for finishing, 1 for getting all the problems right). Then she did a more difficult timed test with a combination of multiplication, division, addition and subtraction. She did well on this, though not perfectly, and I told her that this was extra-hard math and that she was doing a good job. She earned 2 wild cards for this as well. Then we went through some mixed multiplication and division word problems. The student had to identify which problems were multiplication and which were division, and then solve them. We finished by playing multiplication and division war for the last 10 minutes. The student is doing well at multiplication and seems to be getting most of her homework done easily. The student is getting very good grades in math, so I am focusing on enrichment and number sense, and trying to help her become confident with larger numbers in multiplication and division. We will continue this at our next session."
"Today we played trading games and measurement games. We went over reading and writing (letter and sound recognition), and finished with a review of Spanish vocabulary words."
"We went over the chapter about bar graphs, etc. The student is very good at them! I don't even need to explain the concept to him and he can do the problems."
"We covered multiplying decimals by whole numbers in word problems. The students did a great job of executing problems involving multiplying decimals by whole numbers. They understood what to do to solve each word problem. They showed a lot of excitement during the session. It was a productive session."
"I think that adding fractions with a different denominator has been difficult for the student. It has certainly taken a lot of encouragement, but today he almost did the entire problem by himself. He should be very proud of his accomplishment!"
"On Thursday the student and I wrote and edited a paragraph based on a story we read. He focused and powered through it the best yet! If a person would have seen his attitude and focus on Thursday and compared it with him when we started, they wouldn't think it was the same boy. As usual, we talked about following along while reading with a finger, and I sent homework. I got nearly one full hour of focus from him on Thursday. It was just wonderful."
