Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I had a great session. We are working on math, and getting her to know the material. We are also spending a lot of time with vocabulary. I'm having her work on the critical reading session, which she's doing quite well at. With some practice, I'm sure she'll master the techniques I'm teaching her."
"In this session, the student and I first talked about the MAP test in general and what types of questions were on it. We then began by working on a set of reading passages and related questions. After reading each passage, she summarized it, and then we talked through the questions together. She had no problems summarizing, showing that she understood the main ideas in each passage. She did a good job answering most questions about details from the passage. We practiced noticing how answer choices were different, thinking about which answer best matched the overall idea of a passage, and finding textual support for answers. We also practiced noticing word roots in these passages and talked about what they meant. Often, she was able to say whether a word had a positive or negative connotation - or to approximate its meaning - even if she didn't know its exact definition. I recommended that she make an account on a vocabulary website for more practice. In the last part of the session, she and I began reading a longer fictional passage. During the reading, we paused and talked about the meaning of words she did not know, the image created by certain lines, and what was happening in the story. I left the passage with her to continue reading. I also suggested that, for harder reading practice, she could begin to try to read fiction books for adults, rather than ones written specifically for young adults."
"The student and I read some of the practice ACT English passages, and he explained to me his reasoning for the answers he picked. He uses good logical reasoning and has a strong grasp of proper grammar usage. He explained to me that his goal is to score above a 30 on the exam, and I think it is good that he has set a high goal for himself. I also helped him with his Precalculus homework and explained some concepts to him about cosine and sine graphs."
