"During this lesson we worked more on level 7 readings from a website and read more from "The Giver," with the student answering comprehension questions about what he read. I am definitely seeing that he is more confident and comfortable every time we meet, which is great progress, however, he still needs to work on reading comprehension when he reads by himself as opposed to reading aloud with me. I asked him to read more from "The Giver" for next time on his own, and will give him comprehension questions to see how he understood what he read. Over the weekend I will look for more activities to help him improve his comprehension while reading silently."
"Rather than using the student's textbooks, we utilized a literature website as a reading resource. I had him read both a 6th-grade passage and a 7th-grade passage, and after each section, I asked him to jot down notes about what he had just read. Once he finished each passage, he answered questions regarding the passages; afterward, we went over each answer, and it turned out that he answered each question correctly. He is a bright student. We will be meeting again on Tuesday."
"I had a good first session with the student today. We spent most of the hour getting to know each other, discussing which subjects he is working on in school, and what he feels more and less confident about in general. We are going to be working with spelling, penmanship, and reading comprehension, but he's a bright kid and shows lots of promise. Next session, we will begin reading an assigned book together."
